Promo: National Day on August 1st
Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.
Until now, August 1st is celebrated everywhere in Switzerland. There are different events that take place on this date and in most cities, there will be fireworks on the lake or bonfires on hills and other elevated spots. The most famous celebration is on the Rütli meadow in the canton of Uri, where the legendary pledge of alliance took place several years ago. On August 1st public as well as private buildings are decorated with national and cantonal flags, and the bakers produce special bread rolls with a small Swiss flag on top.
